Fitzroy North Property Crime Analysis

Evidence-Based Community Safety Guide

Latest Data: Year ending June 2025 | Report: October 2025

Introduction

What Prompted This: Over the past 6-12 months, I've personally noticed a rise in local property crime. Two tradies had vehicles stolen, another had their van broken into twice, and several neighbours had break-ins. Because I'm reasonably well-connected in the community, I kept hearing these stories. I wanted to verify if this was just personal bias, or if something was actually happening.

What The Data Shows: I spent a weekend reviewing official crime statistics. The data confirms an upward trend. Fitzroy North is currently experiencing elevated property crime rates compared to state averages. Notably, our motor vehicle theft rate is more than double the Victorian average.

The Good News: Crime Stoppers Victoria and Victoria Police research shows up to 80% of burglaries involve unlocked doors or windows, meaning the vast majority of property crime is preventable. This report outlines simple, practical steps we can take.

Why I'm Sharing This: I don't want to cause alarm—we're very lucky and safe in relative terms. The goal is simply to share the facts so we can band together and make small, effective changes.

Deep Dive: Comprehensive Prevention Guide

Practical Security Investments

AirTags / Trackers ($45-$150)

Best for: Bikes, tools, bags, vehicles
Tip: Hide in bike frame, tool boxes, under car seats.

GPS Vehicle Trackers ($150+)

Best for: Cars, trade vehicles, trailers
Why: Trackers ensure your property can be located quickly if removed.

Quality Bike Locks ($80-$150)

D-Locks: Kryptonite New York, Abus Granit
Critical: Lock frame AND both wheels to an immovable object.

Steering Wheel Locks ($30-$100)

Why effective: Acts as a highly visible deterrent that increases the time required for theft.

Motion Sensor Lights

A simple, effective deterrent. Coordinate with neighbours for better street-wide coverage.

Security Cameras

Helpful features: Night vision, motion alerts, cloud/local storage. (Ring, Arlo, Eufy, or Wired PoE).

Register Your Cameras with Police

What it is: A voluntary program where you log your camera location with Victoria Police. When an incident happens nearby, police can quickly identify which residents might have helpful footage instead of door-knocking.

To register: Email A/SGT Lauren Hele at lauren.hele@police.vic.gov.au with your camera details (location, direction it faces).

Note: Audible Alarms Need Community Response

Alarms are only effective if we pay attention to them. To make alarms work:

  • Use the street WhatsApp group to check in if an alarm sounds.
  • Agree on a response protocol: check visually, call 000 if suspicious activity is seen.
  • Share alarm codes with 1-2 trusted neighbours if you travel frequently.

Community-Level Actions

When multiple houses on a street implement basic security measures, it benefits the whole block. It's about evidence-based deterrence, not shifting the problem.

"Lights On" Agreement

When neighbors travel, take turns: leaving lights on (timers work well), bringing in bins, moving cars, and checking that doors/windows are secure.

Camera Overlap

One camera often captures a neighbor's driveway as well. Pooled coverage supports everyone on the street.

For Tradespeople: Advice for Work Vehicles

Trade vehicles are frequently targeted across the state. A few sensible measures can save thousands:

  1. Remove tools inside EVERY night (non-negotiable). It takes 10 minutes but saves immense hassle.
  2. Consider a bolted tool vault if removing tools isn't possible.
  3. Remove/cover business signage overnight if possible.
  4. Park strategically where residents' windows face your vehicle, or under street lights.
  5. Rear-facing dash cam (with parking mode + night vision) can be a helpful deterrent.

We're lucky to live in Fitzroy North. It's a wonderful community. While these statistics highlight an area we can improve, they also show that simple, preventative measures make a huge difference. When we take basic precautions and look out for each other gently and consistently, we keep our streets safe and supportive.
